The service allows users to communicate with peers by voice, video, and instant messaging over the Internet. Phone calls may be placed to recipients on the traditional telephone networks. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free of charge, while calls to landline telephones and mobile phones are charged via a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features, including file transfer, and videoconferencing. Competitors include SIP and H.323-based services, such as Empathy, Linphone,Ekiga [4] as well as the Google Talk service.
Skype has 663 million registered users as of September 2011.[5] The network is operated by Microsoft, which has its Skype division headquarters in Luxembourg. Most of the development team and 44% of the overall employees of the division are situated in the offices ofTallinn and Tartu, Estonia.[6][7][8]
Unlike most VoIP services, Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client–server system, and makes use of background processing on computers running Skype software; the original name proposed – Sky peer-to-peer – reflects this.
Some network administrators have banned Skype on corporate,[9] government, home, and education networks,[10] citing reasons such as inappropriate usage of resources, excessive bandwidth usage,[11] and security concerns.[12]

Windows Live is the collective brand name for a set of services and software products from Microsoft, part of their software plus services platform. A majority of these services are Web applications, accessible from a browser, but there are also client-side binary applications that require installation. There are three ways in which Windows Live services are offered: Windows Live Essentials applications, web services, and mobile services.[2]
Microsoft said that Windows Live “is a way to extend the Windows user experience”.[3] Windows Vista provides a link in its user interface to download Windows Live Messenger, and Windows 7 saw the removal of applications such as Windows Mail,Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker and replaced with the Windows Live Essentials suite, a software package that allows the downloading and installation of similar offerings from Windows Live.[4] Microsoft announced that Windows 8 will see Windows Live apps included right out of the box, and will include built-in synchronization technologies powered by Windows Live SkyDrive.[5]

Google Talk is an instant messaging service that provides both text and voice communication.[1][2] The instant messaging service is colloquially known as “gchat” to its users, although Google does not endorse this name.[3]
Google Talk is also the name of the client applications offered by Google to access the service. Google Talk applications are available for Microsoft Windows[1] (XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Windows 7), Android,[4] Blackberry,[5] and Google Chrome OSoperating systems.[6]
Because the Google Talk servers communicate with clients using an open protocol, XMPP, the service can also be accessed using any other client that supports XMPP. Such clients are available for a number of operating systems not supported by the Google Talk client.[1]
VoIP in Google Talk uses an older version of what became the Jingle protocol. The technology used within the Google server network, however, is not publicly known.
